The United States Redefined

Today, we begin a new year that should be full of hope, promise, and exciting new opportunities. It is usually a chance for us to put the problems of the previous year behind us, and start fresh with a new vision and new goals to better ourselves.

This year is different. Yesterday afternoon, despite previous threats to veto the bill, President Obama signed into law the atrocious National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). In doing so, he has declared the United States a battlefield, allowing  for the indefinite detention of American citizens, without reason and without trial.

As we learned a couple weeks ago, it was actually the Obama administration that requested the removal of language that would have excluded American citizens from indefinite detention.

Welcome to the U.S.S.A. (United Socialist States of America), my fellow citizens. It’s very comforting to know that we’re starting out 2012 under a law that would allow the government to send military personnel to drag us out of our beds, take us to a F.E.M.A. detention camp, and hold us forever if they choose…..with no reason and without being permitted a trial.

In a statement that accompanied his signature, Obama said:

“I have signed this bill despite having serious reservations with certain provisions that regulate the detention, interrogation, and prosecution of suspected terrorists.”

That sounds to me like he has “serious reservations” because he wants MORE power than what the bill authorizes.

Obama went on to claim that:

 “My administration will not authorize the indefinite military detention without trial of American citizens. Indeed, I believe that doing so would break with our most important traditions and values as a nation.”

I do not find that reassuring considering the extensive list of promises Obama has made and then broken during his time in office. If he wasn’t intending to use the NDAA to detain U.S. citizens, then why did his administration request the removal of language that would protect us?

The ACLU isn’t buying it either. It issued a press release yesterday stating:

“President Obama’s action today is a blight on his legacy because he will forever be known as the president who signed indefinite detention without charge or trial into law,” said Anthony D. Romero, ACLU executive director. “The statute is particularly dangerous because it has no temporal or geographic limitations, and can be used by this and future presidents to militarily detain people captured far from any battlefield.  The ACLU will fight worldwide detention authority wherever we can, be it in court, in Congress, or internationally.”

If the ACLU is concerned, we should be too. The NDAA and the indefinite detention provisions weren’t passed just for the heck of it. The F.E.M.A. camps weren’t activated and staffed because they aren’t planning to fill them.

Be vigilant, my friends. Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst.
